Smart Communities Network
Open space--or green space--is an extremely valuable commodity for communities because it contributes to natural systems preservation, recreation, education, cultural heritage and aesthetics. Some types of open space include farmland, wetlands, riparian lands, rangeland, forests and woodlands, parks, coastal lands and urban open space.

Route 66 Corridor Preservation Program
In 1999, in response to the recognized need to preserve the rich resources of the historic highway, Congress passed an Act (pdf) to create the Route 66 Corridor Preservation Program. Administered by the National Park Service, the program collaborates with private property owners; non-profit organizations; and local, state, federal, and tribal governments to identify, prioritize, and address Route 66 preservation needs. It provides cost-share grants to successful applicants for the preservation and restoration of the most significant and representative properties dating from the route’s period of outstanding historical significance, 1926 through 1970.

Bring Back Route 66 Recommissioning Initiative
U.S. Highway 66 is part of our very national identity, a little bit like baseball or apple pie. Route 66 is not just any ordinary route number. It has become a national icon and symbol that we associate with our freedom of travel, our hopes for a better life as well as a nostalgic reminder of a bygone era. There are very few Americans who have not at least heard of Route 66.

Missouri
The great "Show Me" State of Missouri has some of the most bucolic, verdant and scenic sections of Route 66. There are also a number of traditional Route 66 attractions such as the 1931 Bridge on the Meramec River at the Route 66 State Park, Steiny's Inn (newly reopened Visitor Center for Route 66 State Park), Henry Shaw Arboretum, Meramec Caverns, the scenic Devils Elbow area, the old stone house at Jensen Point Overlook, Onondaga Cave at Leasburg, 66 Drive-In Theatre at Carthage and Schifferdecker Park and Museum in Joplin.
